Vertical Lake

Information
Vertical Lake

Vertical Lake are revolutionizing sustainable aquaculture production by leveraging unique, sustainable & organic bio-filtration technology to produce premium fish protein and super Plant Food (nutrient fertiliser) for a variety of markets globally.

The Challenge

Vertical Lake have developed innovative sustainable and circular environmental technology that was well received when demonstrated and it was as such already in the public domain before we came to meet Vertical Lake. They did have an initial Kenya filing, however, we were approached by Vertical Lake on its breath and depth.

IP Asset worked to put in place suitable wider protection for their Intellectual Property in preparation for future growth and investment.

How IP Asset supported:

IP Asset provided the following support:

  1. Conducted an IP audit to determine the status of existing disclosures and identify protection opportunities.
  2. Uncovered a previously unknown Kenyan patent filing made nine months earlier by the founders, unknown to their UK partners.
  3. Developed a forward-looking IP strategy aligned with investment goals and commercial roadmap.
  4. Filed an international (PCT) application, preserving global protection options for a suite of inventions.
  5. Delivered a cost-effective first filing approach designed specifically for a start-up company needing broad future protection.
The Result

Vertical Lake are now in a position with a viable international protection strategy, a clear understanding of their existing rights, and a filing pathway enabling protection of multiple inventions within start-up stage budget constraints.

This strengthened investment readiness and positioned the company to capture long-term value from its technology.

Vertical Lake was nominated for The Earthshot Prize in 2025 by The Royal Academy of Engineering.
