ACUA Ocean is developing next-generation autonomous vessel technology with applications across the maritime sector.

The Challenge

ACUA Ocean’s technology is highly disruptive, with numerous potential patentable features. The central challenge was identifying which inventions would deliver the broadest defensive protection, enabling control of critical market space without excessive or unfocused filing.

Operating in a heavily regulated industry, ACUA Ocean also needed robust patent support to help drive regulatory acceptance and future commercial rollout.

  2. Prioritised the most commercially disruptive inventions, focusing on features that prevent competitive entry.
  3. Filed multiple UK patent applications, achieving clear search reports for four out of five first filings.
  4. Secured early grant of a UK application within 18 months, including protection for a technology required by all autonomous vessels under international maritime rules.
The Result

ACUA Ocean now holds a portfolio of broad, strategically targeted patents in the autonomous vessel domain, including protection over a key technology that every autonomous vessel will require.

These filings strengthen regulatory and commercial positioning, and support ongoing efforts to bring autonomous vessels into full maritime operation.
